Services
We at the Fight Doctors are passionate about combat sports, and we’re passionate about the practice of medicine. So it is a foregone conclusion that we would naturally be interested in the health of those fighters who compete in such a physical sport.
The services we offer reflect our interest in the health and welfare of the fighters in our care. Our services protect the well-being of the fighters and ensure that they are able to compete to the best of their abilities. These services also help to protect the fighter from injury in two ways.
- Our testing reviews look for communicable, bloodborne diseases that one fighter could easily pass on to the other fighter. Let’s take, for example, our HIV/HepB/HepC/CBC test. Three of the components of this test look for the presence of antibodies, proteins, or antigens that could lead us to discover that the fighter has a bloodborne, communicable disease. Because of the close contact and nature of the sport, blood, saliva, and sweat are often transferred from one fighter to his opponent. Therefore, by testing for communicable diseases before a fight, we are protecting the health of the fighter and their opponent.
- Our testing looks for pre-existing conditions that could either disqualify the fighter for health reasons or be a condition that could become worse or permanent damage should a fighter compete. Let’s take an ophthalmologist exam as an example. An ophthalmologist, during a pre-fight exam, may find a retinal tear. A retinal tear is a small tear in the thin, light-sensitive tissue that generates visions. While this is a treatable condition, if a fighter were to compete with this tear, the treatable retinal tear could become retinal detachment, which is a much more severe condition and could lead to blindness or at least a severe loss of vision.
The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combat Sports has produced a list of medical requirements by commission. This link provides information on the tests each state’s commission requires for fighters to compete. Some of these tests are required in every state, and some are not. We are proud to provide a number of these examinations for our clients who wish to fight in a professional capacity.
We can perform some of our examinations via teleconferencing from the comfort of your home. In contrast, others will either need to be performed in our office or at a laboratory specializing in running those types of tests. With every examination, we will review the results with you to make sure you thoroughly understand what is being reported and the decisions you may have to make. Then, as medical doctors, we can help guide you in those decisions and even offer solutions and alternatives.
By doing your pre-fight examinations with us, you can be sure that you are getting thorough, accurate testing from medical doctors and surgeons who are there to protect your health before, during, and after your next fight. You can be in no better hands than when you trust your health and your pre-fight examinations with the Fight Doctors!
